New Delhi: India will observe one day State Mourning on June 5 as mark of respect to Sir Anerood Jugnauth, former President and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius.

“As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's State Mourning tomorrow throughout India”, a Home Ministry statement said here.

The National Flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of the mourning throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day, it added.

Sir Anerood Jugnauth was a Mauritian politician and Barrister who served both as President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was Member of Parliament for Piton & Riviere Du Rempart. A central figure of Mauritian politics in the 1980s and 1990s, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1982.

Calling him a 'proud Pravasi Bharatiya', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India had been privileged to honour Sir Anerood with both the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman and the Padma Vibhushan. (UNI)
