New Delhi: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court following the tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, seeking immediate directives to enhance safety measures for pilgrims from across the country.

The stampede, which occurred on the morning of January 29 in the Sangam area, resulted in the death of at least 30 people and injuries to over 60.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who filed the PIL, has urged the apex court to direct all states to establish facilitation centres at Prayagraj, providing essential information regarding safety guidelines for pilgrims.

The plea further emphasizes the need for multilingual announcements and display boards to assist visitors in navigating roads and directions, thereby minimizing confusion and ensuring a safer experience for those from different linguistic backgrounds.

The petitioner has also proposed deploying small medical teams by all state governments, in coordination with Uttar Pradesh authorities, comprising doctors and nurses to handle medical emergencies during the Maha Kumbh.

Additionally, the plea calls for accountability, seeking action against officials and authorities whose alleged negligence led to the stampede.

"Direct the State of Uttar Pradesh to submit a status report on January 29, 2025, stampede and initiate legal action against responsible persons, authorities, and officials for their negligent conduct," the PIL urges.
