Bhubaneswar: Odisha Director General of Police Sunil Kumar Bansal has ordered a high-level crime branch probe into the death of Gobind Sahu, prime accused in the sensation murder of lady teacher Mamita Meher.
Sahu, who was lodged in Kantabanji sub-jail in Bolangir district, was found hanging inside the jail premises on Tuesday.He was rushed to Kantabanji Sub-divisional Hospital by the prison staff but the doctor declared him dead.BJP Odisha President Sameer Mohnaty demanded a CBI probe into the mysterious death of Gobind Sahu and said even the jails and police stations are not safe in Odisha under the rule of the BJD government.
Describing the incident as most unfortunate, Mohanty said justice should be given to the wife of Gobinda Sahu who had questioned that her husband is so strong that he could not commit suicide. She alleged that her husband has been murdered.
Police sources said Govind Sahu was supposed to appear before the SDJM court on Tuesday in connection with the Mamta Meher murder case. However, he was found hanging from a tree inside the jail premises this morningMeanwhile, taking the matter so motu cognizance Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought a detailed report from both the prison and police authorities within a fortnight.
The OHRC has described the death as a custodial death.Sources said as per the NHRC guidelines, a DIG level inquiry will be done and the DIG will submit the report within 24 hours. The Commission asked to submit matters before the bench on January 10, 2023.
The opposition Congress and BJP have targeted the ruling BJD in the murder of Mamita Meher and also the mysterious death of prime accused Gobind Sahu and alleged that the government from day one has been trying to suppress the matter as former minister of state Home Dibya Shankar Mishra was involved in the Mamata Meher murder case.
Congress MLA Santish Singh Saluja alleged a big ‘conspiracy’ behind the death of Gobinda Sahu and questioned how could Prime accused Gobind Sahu who was given all comforts inside the jail committed suicide.He too demanded a CBI probe into his death inside the jail premises.BJP Mahila Morcha President Smruti Patnaik said a probe must be conducted to find out whether Gobinda Sahu was killed or forced to commit suicide inside the jail premises despite heavy security arrangements.
DIG of Prisons, Sambalpur Range Anusaya Jena has been asked to conduct the probe and submit the preliminary report within 24 hours.Mamita Meher, who was serving as a teacher at Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling of Kalahandi district was murdered on October 8 last by Gobind Sahu as she had threatened to disclose the sexual escapades of Sahu who was the managing committee president of the educational institution.The lady teacher’s decomposed body was exhumed from an under-construction stadium located close to the Mahaling school on October 19 last.Sahu after killing Mamita had cut her body into pieces and set it on fire before burying it.(UNI)
