Rohingya crisis: Apex court grants more time

Rohingya crisis: Apex court grants more time
, Saturday, 14 October 2017 (07:47 IST)
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today posted the Rohingya refugees matter for further hearing on November 21, with the observation that a balance has to be struck between national security and human rights. A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, granted more time for submissions on the sensitive subject.

National importance, the apex court ruled, cannot be secondary and at the same time, the human rights of the refugees should be kept in mind. "We have to strike a balance," the CJI said. It is an issue of great magnitude and at stake are the human rights of many, the CJI added. The state, the CJI observed, has a bigger role. Additional Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Union of India, contended that the issue had international ramifications. The apex court said it should be apprised if the Centre take any kind of contingency plan. (UNI)
