Rohingya Deportation: Farooq wants India to abide by UN charter to deal with the crisis
, Monday, 8 March 2021 (23:02 IST)
Jammu: In the wake of drive launched by the government against illegal immigrants (Rohingyas) settled in Jammu, National Conference president and Member Parliament, Dr Farooq Abdullah on Monday said that India must abide by the United Nation charter to deal with the crisis.
“We know the situation in their land and India is a signatory to the UN charter on refugees and we should abide by it and work on humanitarian grounds,’ Dr Abdullah said while speaking at a function organized on International Women’s Day here at the party headquarters.

“Nobody can settle here without the permission of the Government of India,” he said and urged the party workers to remain cautious against any false propaganda on the issue.

Mr Abdullah’s remarks came in the backdrop of the BJP accusing the National Conference (NC) and the Congress of settling foreign refugees, including Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals, in Jammu city.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration so far had sent nearly 200 Rohingyas to a jail in Kathua district after they were found living illegally during a verification drive in the city.

More than 14000 foreigners, including Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshi nationals, are settled in Jammu and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where their population has increased by over 6,000 between 2008 and 2016, according to official data.

The former J&K Chief Minister however, also said that he does not have time to campaign for TMC in support of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for the upcoming state polls.(UNI)
