SC says foreign law firms cannot open offices in India

New Delhi: The Supreme Court in its verdict on Tuesday upheld the judgements of the Bombay High Court and Madras High Court in connection with the opening up foreign law firms in India, but with certain modifications in the matter.

The foreign law firms cannot open their offices in India, the apex court said on Tuesday in its verdict.A division bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Arun Mishra and also comprising Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, passed the verdict after hearing from the petitioner and respondent.

The foreign lawyers can advice on 'fly in fly out' basis on foreign law firms but it should be on a temporary or casual basis, the top court said in its verdict.Foreign lawyers can appear in International Commercial Arbitration (ICA) subject to relevant institutional and certain framework and rules.The SC said that foreign law firms cannot open offices in india, but however they can advise their clients.(UNI)
