SC stays implementation of three farm laws, forms a committee
, Tuesday, 12 January 2021 (14:03 IST)
New Delhi:The Supreme Court said on Tuesday stayed the implementation of three farm laws until further orders and constituted a four-member Committee to understand the ground situation and get a clear picture about the laws.
The three-Judged Bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde and comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramaniam, while hearing petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the three farm laws which are at the core of the farmers agitation, said ‘’we are going to suspend the implementation of the three farm laws until further orders…there will be a committee to hold talks",

However, farmers unions said they would continue their agitation till the three farm laws are repealed.

The Apex Court had on Monday pulled up the Centre for its handling of the protests. The apex court indicated that it would stay the three farm laws if the government was not willing to keep these in abeyance till it reached consensus with the protesting farmers.

Advocate M L Sharma who is challenging the farm laws, told the Court that farmers were unwilling to appear before a committee. The Chief Justice told Mr Sharma that the Court is concerned about protecting the life and property of citizens affected by the farmers' protests. "We are trying to solve the problem in accordance with the powers we have," Live Law quoted the Chief Justice as saying.

‘’We are forming a committee so that we have a clearer picture. We don't want to hear arguments that farmers will not go to the committee. We are looking to solve the problem.’’(UNI)
