Shopian encounter: 2 militants killed, soldier injured

Srinagar: Two militants, including a foreigner, were killed and a soldier was injured in a fierce encounter in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Tuesday, state police chief S P Vaid said here. The operation is going on when the reports last came in, Director General of Police (DGP) Vaid said.

Acting on a tip off about the presence of militants, Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation in village Batmuran Shopian in south Kashmir late on Monday night. All exit points were sealed, they said, adding that when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, the militants hiding in a house resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.

The operation continued throughout the night, Dr Vaid said, adding that the two militants were killed in the exchange of fire. He said bodies of both the slain militants have been recovered. One of the slain militant is a foreigner and another is a local, he said, adding that there could be one more militant in the area.A soldier was also injured in the encounter during which a house was also damaged.(UNI)
