New Delhi: AICC general secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat on Saturday met Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh ahead of a possible announcement of a new state party chief.
Capt Amarinder has conveyed that he will honour any decision taken by the Congress high command, Mr Rawat told media after the meeting.
"Had a fruitful meeting with @harishrawatcmuk.Reiterated that any decision of @INCIndia Presìdent will be acceptable to all. Raised certain issues which he said he’ll take up with @INCIndia president”, Capt Amarinder tweeted.
Meanwhile, cricketer-turned-politician and former Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu met Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar and vice-president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Lal Singh.
Reportedly, the political hustle and bustle in the state will soon be followed by a revamp announcement by the party high command.
As per sources, the party is likely to make Mr Sidhu the new Punjab Congress chief, which may upset Capt Amarinder. The party wants to accommodate both the leaders and defuse the tensions between them.
Mr Sidhu has questioned Capt Amarinder's style of working and holds him guilty of not solving the sacrilege case.
On the other hand, Capt Amarinder has accused Mr Singh of not toeing the party lines. Mr Sidhu was dropped from Local Bodies portfolio in 2019 by Capt Amarinder.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party national president J P Nadda has called a meeting of Punjab leaders in Delhi.
The BJP, as per sources, wants to take the advantage of factionalism in Congress as it has already lost its alliance with Shrimoni Akali Dal over new farm law.
Congress has maintained that upcoming Punjab Assembly polls will be contested under the leadership of Capt Amarinder.(UNI)
