Six militants killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar: Six militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian in the wee hours of Sunday.

Troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation following a tip off about the presence of militants at Batpora Kapran, Shopian, in the wee hours, official sources told UNI this morning.

They said when the security forces were sealing the area, the militants resorted to firing with automatic weapons, which was retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.

Six militants were killed in the encounter and operation was still going on when the reports last came in. A soldier was also injured.

Mobile internet service in Shopian has been suspended and additional security forces have been rushed to prevent any demonstration.

This was second major success for security forces as on Friday, six militants were killed in Anantnag. (UNI)
