Srinagar: A top Jash-e-Mohammed (JeM) commander was killed in an encounter on Monday which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on Saturday night in south Kashmir district of Shopian, where a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was gunned down yesterday.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar congratulated security forces for killing JeM commander Sajjad Afghani in the gunfight in Shopian, where mobile internet remained suspended since Saturday night as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
Meanwhile, three youths and a police constable were injured in clashes which erupted on Saturday night near the encounter site where security forces fired pellets, burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the stone pelting demonstrators on Sunday.
A police official told UNI that one more militant was killed in the encounter in Shopian this morning, taking the total death toll of ultras in the gunfight to two. “The operation was going on when the reports last came in,” he added.(UNI)
