New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti and said his life continues to motivate millions.
The Prime Minister said, ''Bowing to one of the greatest sons of Mother India, the embodiment of courage, compassion and good governance, the exceptional Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. His life continues to motivate millions''.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made a mark as a valorous warrior and an outstanding administrator, he said in his missive.
''From building a strong navy to ushering several pro-people policies, he was outstanding in all spheres. He will always be remembered for his opposition to injustice and intimidation,'' Mr Modi wrote.
Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the chhatrapati (emperor) of his realm at Raigad. The Maharashtra government lists February 19 as a holiday commemorating Shivaji Jayanti.
Rahul extends greetings on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj jayanti

The Congress also paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and said on twitter, "a great warrior who laid the foundations of the Maratha empire in India. He dedicated his life to building a strong and long lasting empire".The Maratha warrior king was born on February 19, 1630 at Shivneri Fort in Pune.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday paid homage to great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji on his birth anniversary.
"Respectful homage to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha king, on his birth anniversary," Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page.Born on this day in 1630, Shivaji was a warrior-king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan.

Shivaji's military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a Maratha navy. He established a competent and progressive civil rule with well-structured administrative organisations.
He revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions and promoted the usage of Marathi and Sanskrit, rather than Persian language, in court and administration.
Shivaji was endowed with talents of the highest order and a clear vision, was the one who stood up to injustice. He had also inspiring and endearing personality which spontaneously commanded respect, loyalty and the highest sacrifices from his devoted soldiers and peasants.
Shivaji was also the staunch promoter of secularism and roused the sleeping conscience of the nation.He was the ultimate man of the father of freedom movement in Maharashtra and source of inspiration to the Hindu throughout India.(UNI)
