Agartala: A middle-aged man was arrested last night at Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) with a lifeless newborn in a plastic carry bag when he was walking out of the hospital campus.

The man has been identified as Nipu Das from Mohanpur on the northern outskirts of Agartala. Police later recovered his wife from a washroom of the hospital in a critical condition; she has now been undergoing treatment in AGMC.

While the woman denies both the delivery and the existence of the baby, Das has pleaded innocence, claiming his wife handed him the infant after delivery. “I realised the baby was dead and kept it in the carry bag until my wife could undergo treatment,” Das told police.

According to the hospital authority, Das had brought his wife, Shilpi Das, to the hospital for treatment. She reportedly delivered the baby inside the hospital washroom.

However, the couple’s statements to hospital authorities and police were riddled with inconsistencies, raising suspicions of foul play.

Police officers on duty said, “The prima facie suggested the possibility of domestic violence, and the husband assaulted his pregnant wife, which led to the premature delivery inside the hospital premises''.

The wife has been shifted for treatment and is now stable, while the husband remains in custody, they said.
Investigation is ongoing.
