Ghaziabad: A criminal involved in looting and murder of an engineering undergraduate student was killed in an encounter with the police in Masuri area of Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Monday.
Police sources said that during vehicle checking drive on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday the police team spotted two persons moving on a motorcycle in a suspicious manner.
"When the police team attempted to intercept the miscreants, they opened fire in which a Sub-Inspector (SI) was injured," they said.
Police sources said that in retaliatory firing one criminal sustained bullet injury.
"The injured was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. The criminal was identified as Jitendra alias Jeetu, a resident of Mishal Garhi under Masuri police station. He carried a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest," they said.
Police sources said that around 12 cases, including one under Gangster Act, were registered against the deceased.
"Kirti Singh, a first year engineering student at ABES engineering college in Ghaziabad, sustained serious head injury during the loot attempt by two motorcycle-borne miscreants on October 27. She died during treatment on Sunday," they said.
Police sources said that while one of the accused was arrested by the police on Saturday, Jeetu was absconding since then. (UNI)
