Sultanpur (UP): A criminal wanted in case of armed dacoity at a jewellery shop was killed in an encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police in Kotwali Dehat area of Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, an STF spokesman said.

The spokesman said that armed robbers committed the dacoity at Bharat Jewellers in broad daylight on August 28 in Sultanpur. "One of the robbers was identified as Mangesh Yadav, who was involved in other criminal cases, and carried a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest," he said.

He said that various units and teams of STF were directed to workout the case. "On Thursday the STF team was tipped off that Mangesh, along with his aide, was moving towards Jaunpur from Sultanpur," he said.

The spokesman said that acting on the tip off the STF team cordoned off the area. "When the STF team signalled their motorcycle to stop the miscreants opened fire. In retaliatory firing, one of the miscreants identified as Mangesh was injured," he said.

He said that the injured criminal was taken to the community health centre where doctors declared him dead. "There are at least 9 cases lodged against Mangesh in different police stations in Sultanpur, Jaunpur and Pratapgrah districts," he said.

The spokesman said that 4,950 kilogram silver jewellery, one pistol, one country-made firearm and cartridges were recovered from the slain criminal.
