New Delhi:Violence broke out between two groups at North West Delhi's Jahangirpuri area during a Hanuman Jayanti procession on Saturday, leading to stone pelting and injuries to many people, who have been shifted to hospital.
Police said the situation was under control and adequate police force has been deployed in the sensitive area. Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana posted a tweet on the incident, which said, "In today's incident in NW District, the situation is under control. Adequate additional force has been deployed in Jahangirpuri and other sensitive areas.
Senior officers have been asked to remain in the field and closely supervise the law & order situation & undertake patrolling." "Strict action will be taken against rioters. Citizens are requested to not pay heed to rumours and fake news on social media," Asthana said in another tweet. The sources said senior police officials rushed to the spot and were trying to pacify the situation, which was slightly tense as stone pelting incidents took place again after an interval of around 15 minutes.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi and said, "The incident of stone pelting in the procession in Jahangirpuri, Delhi is highly condemnable. Strict action should be taken against those who are guilty. Appeal to all people-Keep peace by holding each other's hands. "Spoken to Hon'ble LG. He assured that all steps are being taken to ensure peace and that guilt will not be spread," he added. (UNI)
