935 elephants died in last 12 years in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: As many as 935 elephants have died during the last 12 years, Odisha Minister for Forest and Environment Pradip Kumar Amat told the state Assembly.

Replying to a question of Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, (BJP) the Minister said the elephants died during 2011-12 to 2021-2022.

Amat said while 48 died due to poaching, 16 were poisoned to death, 135 died due to electrocution and 12 died in rail accidents.

Similarly, while six died in road accidents, 141 died after falling from high places, 307 died after suffering from various diseases and 119 died from natural deaths.

The reasons for the deaths of 131 elephants were not yet known.

The Minister said the government is aware of the elephant carcass found under the earth and findings of elephants with gunshot injuries and taking necessary action. (UNI)
