Guwahati: RTI activist Akhil Gogoi was acquitted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court of his alleged involvement in violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

This comes only days after the NIA court had acquitted Gogoi in the Chabua case on June 22. With this, he has been acquitted of all cases filed against him by the NIA in Assam.

Along with Gogoi, Dhajya Konwar, Manas Konwar, and Bitu Sonowal have also been acquitted by the NIA court.

Mr Gogoi got elected to the Assam assembly from Sivsagar constituency.

The NIA had taken over two cases against the Assam MLA in December 2019 regarding his alleged involvement in violent protests against the CAA. The cases were filed in Chandmari and Chabua police stations in Guwahati and Dibrugarh respectively.

Serious charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were slapped against the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader. (UNI)
