Gwalior: A police investigation is being stepped up vis-à-vis a ghastly dowry-harassment case wherein a newly-married woman was allegedly compelled by her Dabra-resident in-laws to drink acid on June 28 and is consequently battling for life at a Delhi-based hospital.
In the wake of a fresh statement by the victim Shashi Jatav, law-enforcement authorities registered an attempt-to-murder charge on Monday. Her spouse Veerendra and his sister Babita are absconding. The wife of Veerendra’s sibling is under arrest.
Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal met the victim, posted the latter’s photograph in social media on Tuesday and wrote, “It is hoped that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan ensures speedy arrest of the perpetrators.”
Shashi was married in April. After the incident, she was initially admitted at an infirmary in this divisional headquarters and rushed to Delhi on July 7. A police complaint was lodged on July 3 by Shashi’s mother Vaijayanti.
The crime assumed political hues with Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee President Kamal Nath alleging gross negligence by police. (UNI)
