Lucknow: A Samajwadi Party leader from Aligarh attempted self-immolation on Sunday in protest against not getting an assembly ticket.

Waiting for a long time in the hope of getting a ticket, Aditya Singh Lodhi tried to set his body on fire by pouring petrol outside the state party office here on Sunday, said police.

But timely intervention of police saved him with just minor burn injuries and he was taken into custody.

The incident took place at around 1100 hours just before Ex UP minister Dara Singh Chauhan was to join the party leaving BJP.

Aditya Singh Lodhi, who had been trying to get a ticket from Aligarh's Chhara for a long time, took the step of self-immolation when he was denied ticket.

Talking to reporters Aditya said he has spent his entire youth and life for the party. He is upset for not getting a ticket from Aligarh's Charra. The police has taken Aditya Thakur into custody. He has been sent to the Civil Hospital for medical treatment.

But later talking to mediapersons SP president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the youth who tried self immolation could be a BJP supporter and was sent to defame his party.

"I will speak to the person and find out the reality," he said. (UNI)
