Mandya: In a humane gesture, Karnataka government Monday immersed unclaimed ashes of Covid-19 victims in River Cauvery at the historic town of Srirangapatna by performing final rites as per Hindu tradition.

Giving a dignified farewell for the victims was Revenue Minister R Ashoka, who attended the rituals on the banks of the river, which was performed by Hindu priests under the supervision of Bhanuprakash Sharma at Gosai Ghat.

Names of nearly 950 victims were invoked during the rituals by the priests who performed the ceremonies. The ashes that were left unclaimed were stored in mud urns.

In June too, Ashoka had immersed the ashes in the river.

Meanwhile, farmers blocked Ashoka's car in protest against the farm laws passed in the Parliament and reopening sugar factory with government management at the helm of affairs. (UNI)
