Kashmir unrest: One more injured succumbs, death toll reaches 58

Srinagar: With one more civilian succumbing to his injuries in a hospital here this morning, the death toll has increased to 58 in security force firing in the Kashmir valley since July 9, a day after Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag. A youth, identified as Suhail Wani, who was critically wounded when guards of Sub District Magistrate (SDM), Ramban opened fire on demonstrators who had blocked the Srinagar-Jammu national highway at Lethpora in Pulwama district on August 2, died in the S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), official sources said.

One person was killed and two others, including Suhail, were injured in the firing by a guard who has been arrested. With the death of Suhail, a total of 58 civilians, including two women, were killed and more than 5,000 others injured. Scores of youngsters, including minors, have lost eyesight due to use of pellet guns. A police constable driver also died of drowning after he and his vehicle were pushed into the river Jhelum while another constable died in a grenade blast in Kulgam district. More than 3,000 security personnel were also injured in stone pelting since July 9 in the valley. (UNI)
