Malappuram: Ponnani Police arrested an innocent man and jailed him for four days instead of the real accused with the same name, at Veliyancode in the district and released him on Thursday only after court intervention.

Police arrested Alungal Aboo Backer of Veliyancode on May 20 from near his house following a family court order, on the complaint of a woman that her husband was defying the court order and not paying her alimony of Rs four lakh.

The family court ordered arrest of Vadakepurath Aboo Backer of Veliyangode in connection with a domestic violence case but the Police arrested Alungal Aboo Backer as their father's name is the same as " Mohammed". and remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

The Court ordered his immediate release after the relatives of Alungal Aboobacker approached the court on Thursday.

Police said it was a case of mistaken identity and the real accused who was now employed abroad would be arrested when he reached Kerala.
