Padma Shri awardee ‘Ek Takar Daktar’ Sushovan Banerjee passes away

Kolkata: Padma Shri awardee Dr Sushovan Banerjee from Bolpur, better known as ‘Ek Takar Daktar’ (one rupee doctor) for treating poor patients for just a rupee, passed away Tuesday morning.

He was 84.

The Octogenarian doctor breathed his last at 11.25 am on Tuesday morning. He was suffering from senile diseases for a long time and was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata.

Once the MLA of Bolpur Dr. Sushovan Bandopadhyay's vow was to serve people. He used to treat poor people for just one rupee. As a result, Susobhanbabu was famous not only in Bolpur, but in the whole of Bengal as 'one rupee doctor'.

He is a general physician who has been treating patients for the past 57 years. He was conferred the Padma Shri honour by the Government of India for his humanitarian service to the nation.

Dr Banerjee’s name will be included in the Guinness Book of World Records for treating the highest number of patients. He was treated More than 20 lakh patients and that’s a world record!.

People of Birbhum often say, those who have nobody to call their own, have Dr Sushovan Banerjee at their side, ready to extend a helping hand. There was an acute crisis of medical practitioners during the lockdown situation, but Dr Banerjee is unfazed by such impediments and he was treating 150 patients on an average daily. The entire state salutes this committed physician and a great human being. (UNI)
