Thane: A retired Navy man has been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for life by a court in the district for brutally killing a 72-year-old coolie on February 12, 2018.
Additional public prosecutor Sachin Kulkarni told the court that on the fateful day, a quarrel broke out between the victim, Kanhu Balu Jadhav, a coolie at the Khadavali railway station on the Mumbai-Kasara suburban section, and accused Dhananjay Kumar Sinha (58), who had retired from the Navy way back in 2006 but was living alone and used to frequent the railway station, over sleeping on a bench at the railway platform.
Angry over his objection, Sinha beat to death Jadhav, whose body was later found lying under a bridge near the railway station, the court was told.
After examining eight witnesses and relying on circumstantial evidence, Judge Shoukat Gorwade at Kalyan court on Monday convicted and sentenced Sinha to imprisonment for life.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on the accused, it was stated. (UNI)
