Deoria: In a bizarre case of 'honour killing', a class ninth student in Deoria was allegedly beaten to death by her kin after she insisted on wearing jeans against her family's wish.
The family members have also been accused of trying to dispose of the body by throwing it from over the Patanwa bridge on the Deoria-Kasya in Rampur Karkhana area but it got stuck in its railing.
The police was informed by some locals that the body of a teenage girl was hanging from the railing of a bridge last Tuesday.
They took out the body and sent it for post-mortem. The girl was later identified as Neha Paswan (17), daughter of Amarnath Paswan of Seorahi Kharg in the Mahuadih police station of Deoria. The cops contacted the family in which her mother claimed that the victim received serious head injuries when she was beaten up, leading to her death.
Circle Officer (City) Yash Tripathi said that the post-mortem examination has also confirmed severe injury and fracture in the head. The girl's mother has filed a complaint against 10 people, including the girl's grandparents and her uncles.
The case has been registered case under Sections 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), 302 (punishment for murder) and other provisions of the IPC, Mahuadih SHO Ram Mohan Singh said. The grandparents have been taken into custody and are being interrogated.
The younger brother of the girl, Vivek, told reporters that on Monday evening his uncle Arvind started beating her sister over washing of his clothes and she was seriously injured. He and other uncles took her to the district hospital. But she died on the way and they threw her body from Patnawa Bridge but it remained hanging with a hook of its railing.
Police, however, said the story of family members being angry over her insistence on wearing jeans is not very convincing. The reason for the incident appears to be something else, which the family members are trying to hide and investigations are on, police said.
The victim's father, Amarnath Paswan, works in a private company in Punjab and she was the eldest of four siblings. Neha was a student of Class 9 and her brother Vivek is Class 8 student.
Meanwhile in Banda, a man was held for allegedly raping a 15-year-old Dalit girl in a village located within the Naraini Kotwali police station limits of the district, police said on Thursday.
Late on Tuesday night, when the girl was sleeping in her house, her neighbour Kaleem (24) took her to a nearby agriculture field and allegedly raped her after forcibly making her consume liquor, Circle Officer, Naraini, Nitin Kumar said.
A case was lodged under sections 328 (forced intoxication) and 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as also under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he said, adding that the accused was arrested on Wednesday. The girl has been sent for a medical examination, the officer said. (UNI)
