Chennai: A young girl medical aspirant committed suicide due to fear of failing in NEET exams in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Police sources said that the girl, Soundarya, a native of Thalaiyarampattu village near Katpadi in Vellore district, had told her parents that she found NEET exam papers tough and feared failing in the exams.

Acting on information, police shifted her body to hospital for post mortem. Soundarya, who had scored 510 marks out of 600 in Plus Two, had been in a disturbing mood ever since she came home after writing the exam on Sunday.

This is the third death due to the NEET in the state after medical aspirants Dhanush and Kanimozhi ended their life on Sunday--the day of NEET exams-- and Tuesday respectively, taking the overall number of deaths in the State to 17.

Leaders of various political parties, including AIADMK and PMK, condoled the death of Soundarya and appealed to the students not to take the extreme steps as medicine alone was not a profession and that there were several courses to be pursued in higher education.

The Tamil Nadu government had on Monday passed a BIll seeking to permanently exempt the State from NEET exams and allow admissions to medical seats based on the marks obtained in Plus-2.

Chief Minister M K Stalin, who moved the resolution, said his government would fight a legal battle till NEET was exempted.

The Bill after it was passed in the Assembly, was forwarded to Raj Bhavan which in turn will forward it to President Ram Nath Kovind for getting his assent. (UNI)
