4th Ashes: Australia declared 416/8, England 13/0

Sydney: Australia declared the innings for 416/8 on the second day of the fourth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday.

In reply, England were 13 for no loss with Haseen Hameed (2) and Zak Crawley (2) on the crease.

Usman Khawaja, who played his first Test since 2019, scored an outstanding 137 runs after beinging dropped on 28.

For England, Stuart Broad claimed a five wicket haul and returned with the figure of 5 for 101. James Anderson, Mark Wood and skipper Joe Root got one wicket each.

Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja survived the morning session and Australia went on to lunch break with 209/3 on the board.

Later, Smith and Khawaja completed a 115-run stand before Broad broke the partnership by dismissing Smith for 67.

Cameron Green became Broad’s third victim of the innings after he got caught cheaply for 5. English captain Root dismissed Alex Carrey for 13.

Australia lost three wickets in the second session and were reeling at 321/6 at tea.

In the final session, Broad got rid of skipper Pat Cummins with a sharp bouncer. In the 32nd over, Khawaja got bowled and Broad claimed his five-wicket haul.

Mitchell Starc (34*) and Nathan Lyon’s (16*) were batting when Australia declared their innings at 416/8. (UNI)
