Bengaluru: Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday surpassed South African great Dale Steyn's tally of 439 wickets in Tests after he picked up Dhananjay de Silva's wicket on Day 3 of the pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka.
Ashwin now has 440 wickets from 86 matches, behind Courtney Walsh who bagged 519 wickets from 132 matches.
Ashwin had surpassed Kapil Dev's tally of 434 wickets in Sri Lanka's first innings of the pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.
The Chennai player shot into prominence by winning the Man-of-the-Match in his maiden Test by bagging nine wickets, the second highest by an Indian debutante after Narendra Hirwani's 16.
Ashwin has a distinctive record of grabbing nine five-fors in his first 16 Tests and was a genuine threat to Erapalli Prasanna's Indian record of the march to 100 wickets in 20 Tests. (UNI)
