“Just Ignore”: PHF Tells Pakistani Players As ‘Handshake Snub’ Looms At Sultan Of Johor Cup

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has instructed its national team players to stay composed and avoid any confrontation with Indian players during their Sultan of Johor Cup clash on Tuesday. The directive comes amid rising sporting tensions between the two countries following “Operation Sindoor.”

Recently, the Indian cricket team refrained from shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts during the Asia Cup — including after the final match — prompting Pakistan to file a protest with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). A similar stance is reportedly expected from the Indian junior men’s hockey team in their upcoming match.

A senior PHF official confirmed that players have been advised to remain focused and not react to any perceived snubs. “The players have been told that if the Indian team chooses not to shake hands before or after the match, they should simply ignore it and move on,” the official said. “They’ve also been reminded to avoid any emotional reactions or unnecessary gestures on the field.”

Pakistan began their Sultan of Johor Cup campaign with an emphatic 7–1 win over hosts Malaysia, but lost their second match against Great Britain. The upcoming face-off with India is expected to draw significant attention amid the ongoing diplomatic and sporting tensions between the two nations.
