Mount Maunganui: As the road to recovery continues, Kane Williamson discussed the possibility of representing New Zealand at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India.

In April, Kane Williamson underwent surgery to address a ruptured ACL suffered during the Indian Premier League (IPL), raising doubts about his participation in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

However, encouraging developments followed, as Williamson resumed practice earlier this month and was also part of New Zealand's training camp held here.

Speaking to the reporters at the Bay Oval, Williamson said the possibility of playing in the World Cup has been a huge motivating factor.

"To be at the World Cup is always special. It's still just guesswork at the moment in terms of when the day is or how it's tracking at the time," Williamson said.

"There's a lot of work to do. I am just really following the programme, with the professionals for physio, the support staff and New Zealand Cricket. And it's tough, because you do have some good days, and then you have a few variable ones.

At the time of the injury, Williamson thought that the possibility of being fit in time for the marquee event was 'slim' but the New Zealand batsman has since made remarkable strides in his recovery journey.

"Something like that [World Cup] in the back of your mind is obviously motivating and you want to keep seeing those improvements," Williamson added.

The possible return of Williamson would be a huge boost for New Zealand, who was the Player of the Tournament in the 2019 edition. The 33-year-old was the highest run-getter for the Black Caps with 578 runs in 10 matches at 82.57 while leading the side to the Final.

New Zealand's campaign begins with the rematch of the memorable 2019 Final against England in Ahmedabad. Prior to the World Cup, the two teams will clash in four-match ODI series in what would be a crucial prep for the tournament. (UNI)
