Brisbane: Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts on the retirement announcement of Ravichandran Ashwin, suggesting that the off-spinner could have timed his retirement at the end of the ongoing Test series against Australia.
Gavaskar highlighted that Ashwin’s early retirement, in the middle of an ongoing series, may disrupt the team's plans and leave them "one short" in terms of both personnel and preparation.
Reflecting on Ashwin’s decision, Gavaskar told broadcasters on Wednesday, "He (Ashwin) could have said, 'Listen, after the end of the series, I won’t be available for selection for India.' What it does is that, similarly when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short."
He explained that announcing his retirement during the series makes it harder for the team, as they may have already accounted for Ashwin's involvement in their plans.
"It creates a disruption, as the team may have already planned for Ashwin's participation and now has to quickly adjust without him, which is more challenging than making the change after the series concludes," Gavaskar said.
He also noted that Sydney, with its traditionally spin-friendly pitches, could have been an ideal venue for India to play with two spinners, which Ashwin could have been a part of.
"The selection committee has picked so many players for a tour with a purpose. If there are any injuries, they can select from the reserve players to have in the team," Gavaskar added. "India could have played with two spinners. You never know. He (Ashwin) could have been there for sure. I don’t know how the pitch in Melbourne will be like. Normally, you tend to look at the end of the series. That’s it. In the middle, it is not usual," the batting maestro added.
When questioned about the possibility of Washington Sundar stepping up as Ashwin’s replacement, Gavaskar acknowledged Sundar’s potential. "Maybe Washington Sundar is ahead of him. Rohit (Sharma) mentioned that Ashwin is flying out tomorrow. So, this marks the end of Ashwin as an international cricketer. He has been one heck of a cricketer," he said.
Sundar, who has been a key part of India's spin bowling lineup, expressed his admiration and respect for Ashwin on social media. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sundar wrote, "More than just a teammate – Ash anna, you have been an inspiration, a mentor, and a true champion of the game. It’s been an honour to share the field and the dressing room with you."
Sundar, who hails from the same state as Ashwin, Tamil Nadu, shared how the veteran spinner had been a role model for him from his early years.
"Coming from the same state of TN, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against you and alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The learnings, both on and off the field, are something I will carry with me forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever comes next," Sundar added.
Ashwin’s decision to step away from international cricket marks the end of a stellar career, with the off-spinner having played a key role in India’s success across formats over the years.
