We often say humans are more sensitive than animals, but a recent incident has proved otherwise. In West Bengal, a group of stray dogs displayed extraordinary compassion, challenging the growing perception that street dogs are violent.

In a shocking case from Nabadwip town, stray dogs saved the life of a newborn baby girl. Late at night, when the infant was left abandoned near a toilet on the roadside, a pack of dogs surrounded her. They stood guard around the baby throughout the night, as if protecting her.

The incident took place at Swarajpur Rail Colony in Nabadwip and has gone viral on social media. This comes at a time when a nationwide debate is ongoing about stray dogs, with the Supreme Court recently directing states to move street dogs to shelter homes.

Radha Bhowmik, the woman who found the baby, said someone had abandoned the newborn near the toilet in the darkness of night. The baby, only a few hours old, was alone—but the stray dogs did not leave her. They circled around the infant and quietly guarded her, without barking or moving, as if they sensed she needed protection.

“When I went towards the toilet in the morning, I saw the dogs. They stepped aside, and that’s when I noticed the baby,” Radha said. “These dogs, whom we usually drive away, did something many humans wouldn’t. They kept the baby alive. I immediately picked her up and shouted for help.”

Baby Abandoned Right After Birth

Hearing Radha's cries, her niece-in-law Preeti Bhowmik rushed in and they took the baby to Maheshganj Hospital. Doctors later referred the child to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital. The baby had no external injuries; the blood on her head appeared to be from birth. Police said the infant was abandoned immediately after being born.

The police and Childline team have begun an investigation and contacted the Child Welfare Committee to ensure the baby’s care and safety.
