Man Fined for Saving Wife’s Name as ‘Chubby’ on Phone

A Turkish man’s casual nickname for his ex-wife turned into a costly mistake, as the court found it insulting and ordered him to pay compensation.

According to reports, the man had saved his wife’s name as “Tombik” — a Turkish word meaning chubby — which later sparked a serious dispute between the couple. The Court of Cassation ruled that the woman deserved compensation for being referred to by that nickname, calling it derogatory and disrespectful.

A court in Turkey directed the man to pay his ex-wife material and moral damages after she claimed the nickname was humiliating and offensive.

The issue came to light during their divorce proceedings, when the woman argued that being labeled “Tombik” had harmed her dignity and emotional well-being.

The court agreed, stating that using such an insulting name reflected a lack of respect and had caused emotional suffering.

Consequently, the husband was ordered to compensate his ex-wife.
