A group of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students raised controversial slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah inside the campus after the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
According to a purported video of the protest held on Monday night, slogans condemning the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were raised during the demonstration.
JNU Students’ Union president Aditi Mishra said that students hold a protest every year to condemn the violence that took place on the campus on January 5, 2020.
“All the slogans raised during the protest were ideological in nature and did not target anyone personally. They were not directed at any individual,” Mishra told PTI.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that no complaint has been received so far regarding the slogans raised during the protest.
Violence had erupted on the JNU campus on January 5, 2020, when a mob of masked individuals allegedly entered the university and attacked students in three hostels. The attackers reportedly used sticks, stones and iron rods, vandalising property and assaulting students.
At least 28 people, including then JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as violence continued for nearly two hours. The Delhi Police had faced criticism for its alleged inaction during the incident and for naming student leaders, including Ghosh, in two FIRs related to vandalism on the campus.
