In a shocking incident, a 32-year-old man died after sitting on a box of firecrackers that his six friends set off as part of a challenge on Diwali in southern Bengaluru.
The police have arrested the accused involved.
The incident took place on the evening of October 31 when Shabarish, a daily wage worker from Konanakunte, was celebrating Diwali with six of his friends. All were reportedly intoxicated and the deceased was dared to sit on a lit box of firecrackers, the police said.
"The accused told the victim that if he sat through the firecrackers bursting, they would buy him an autorickshaw," the police official said.
The CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced on social media which shows Shabarish sitting on a rectangular box as one of his friends lit it. Moments later, Shabarish collapsed. Amid a thick cloud of smoke, the friends rushed to check on him.
He was then rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Saturday, the official said.
The Konanakunte police have registered a culpable homicide case under BNS Section 105. BNS Section 288 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances) was also invoked.
