Guwahati: The Assam Government employees are "not entitled" to a second marriage if the spouse is alive and they would seek permission from the state government if they want to second marriage, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Sarma clarified to reporters in Guwahati on Friday that the Assam government's directive on seeking permission for a second marriage will apply to all religious state government employees.

It is to be noted that any employee of the Assam government must obtain departmental government permission before getting married for the second time. The government has issued guidelines for this.

These strict instructions have been given in an office memorandum signed by Neeraj Verma, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, as per the provisions of The Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965.

This is an old circular. we have so many cases after the death of the employee both the wives fight for the pension. We find it very difficult to settle this dispute. Today many widows are deprived of their pension because of conflicting claims. This rule was there earlier, but we did not enforce it. So now we decided to enforce it, he added. (UNI)
