The festival of Dev Uthani Ekadashi holds great spiritual importance in Sanatan Dharma. According to Hindu beliefs, on this sacred day, Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month-long yog nidra (divine sleep), marking the end of Chaturmas. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu on this day, and the Tulsi Vivah (holy marriage of Tulsi and Vishnu) is also performed. However, along with performing rituals and prayers, devotees are advised to follow certain rules and avoid specific actions on this day.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025 Puja Timings

As per the Hindu calendar, Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik. As per the Panchang, the Ekadashi Tithi begins at 9:11 AM on November 1 and ends at 7:31 AM on November 2. Therefore, fasting and rituals for Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be observed on November 1, 2025, according to sunrise. However, those following the Vaishnava tradition will celebrate it on November 2, as per their customs and beliefs. ALSO READ: Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025 Date and Time: When to Keep the Fast – November 1 or 2?

Things You Should Never Do on Dev Uthani Ekadashi

1. Do Not Pluck Tulsi Leaves

On this day, Tulsi Vivah — the divine marriage of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Shaligram (Vishnu) — takes place. Since Tulsi Mata is deeply revered by Lord Vishnu and is believed to observe a fast herself on this day, plucking her leaves is strictly prohibited. Devotees preparing offerings for Vishnu should pluck Tulsi leaves a day before the Ekadashi.

2. Avoid Using Harsh or Negative Words

It is believed that on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, one must avoid arguments, anger, or speaking ill of others. Using offensive or hurtful language can nullify the benefits of fasting and invite negativity into one’s life. ALSO READ: How Many Diyas To Light On Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

3. Do Not Eat Tamasik Food

This sacred day is meant for purity and devotion. Devotees should avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onions, garlic, or any kind of tamasik (impure) food. The day should be observed with sattvik meals and spiritual focus.

4. Avoid Eating Rice

According to Hindu scriptures, consuming rice on Ekadashi is strictly forbidden. It is believed that those who eat rice on this day may be reborn as insect. Therefore, both fasting devotees and their family members should avoid rice completely. ALSO READ: Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2025: If Luck Isn’t on Your Side, Donate These Items on This Day to Awaken Your Fortune

5. Do Not Sleep During the Day

Sleeping during the day on Ekadashi is considered inauspicious. Even those not observing a fast should stay awake and spend the day in devotion. It is auspicious to chant Vishnu mantras, sing bhajans, or participate in night vigils (jagran) dedicated to Lord Vishnu. ALSO READ: Why is Tulsi Married to Shaligram on Dev Uthani Ekadashi?
