The festival of Dev Uthani Ekadashi (also known as Prabodhini Ekadashi) is celebrated on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month. On this sacred day, it is believed that Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month-long yogic sleep, marking the end of Chaturmas. The same day also holds special significance for devotees of Baba Khatu Shyam, known as “Hare Ka Sahara”, as it marks his birth anniversary (Janmotsav).

Located in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, the grand Khatu Shyam Temple witnesses huge celebrations during this time. The deity is given a holy bath with Itra and beautifully adorned with rose, champa, jasmine, and other flowers. Devotees also offer mawa cake (a sweet delicacy) as prasad to Baba Shyam.

This year, there has been confusion among devotees regarding the date — some believe Ekadashi will be observed on November 1, while others claim it will fall on November 2. Here’s what the Hindu calendar says.

When Will Khatu Shyam Jayanti Be Celebrated in 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Ekadashi tithi will begin at 9:11 AM on November 1, 2025, and end at 7:31 AM on November 2, 2025.

Since Ekadashi during sunrise (Udaya Tithi) is considered valid, the Dev Uthani Ekadashi will be observed on November 1, 2025.

Therefore, Khatu Shyam’s birth anniversary will also be celebrated on November 1, 2025.

Why Is Baba Shyam’s Jayanti Celebrated on Dev Uthani Ekadashi?

According to legends, it was on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi that Baba Shyam’s head was enshrined in the temple at Khatu.

Hence, his birth anniversary and Dev Uthani Ekadashi are celebrated on the same day every year.

Who Is Khatu Shyam?

Baba Khatu Shyam’s story dates back to the Mahabharata era. He was Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna, impressed by Barbarik’s immense power and devotion, granted him the boon that he would be worshipped in Kaliyuga as Khatu Shyam.

It is believed that devotees who have a glimpse of Baba Shyam (darshan) or sincerely take his name with faith have their wishes fulfilled.
