During Pitru Paksha (Shradh Paksha), families often have questions about performing Shradh for children who have passed away. The scriptures clearly mention special rules for such cases, which vary according to the child's age and circumstances.

Shradh Rules for Boys

From birth to 2 years: If a boy dies before the age of 2, no Shradh rituals are performed. Neither Tarpan nor Pinddaan is required.

From 2 to 6 years: If the child is older than 2 but under 6 years, only Malin Shodashi is performed. In this ritual, 10 Pinddaan are offered on the sixth and tenth day after death.

Above 6 years: If the boy has undergone the Yagyopaveet Sanskar (Janeu), then all Shradh rituals such as Malin Shodashi, Ekadashi, and Tarpan must be performed.

If Janeu has not been done, then only Malin Shodashi is observed.

Shradh Rules for Girls

From birth to 2 years:
No Shradh rituals are performed if a girl dies before the age of 2.

From 2 to 10 years: For girls between 2 and 10 years, only Malin Shodashi is performed.

Above 10 years: If the girl was married, then all Shradh rituals are performed for her.

If the girl was unmarried, then only Malin Shodashi and Tarpan are observed.

Other Important Rules

Unborn Child: Shradh is not performed for a child who dies in the womb. However, some rituals may be done for peace of the soul. However, a few scholars also suggest performing Malin Shodashi in such cases.

Unknown Date of Death: If the exact death date is not known, Shradh should be performed on Trayodashi Tithi (the 13th day) of Pitru Paksha.
