Navratri is a sacred festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, also known as Shakti. According to scriptures, worshipping the goddess during these nine days removes three types of sufferings - physical, divine, and material. Those who observe the Navratri fast are expected to follow strict rules of discipline and purity. One common question is whether physical relations are considered appropriate during this period.

Should Couples Have Physical Relations During Navratri?

Religious texts and Puranas clearly state that physical relations are not appropriate during any fast or festival. Devotees observing the Navratri fast should especially avoid such thoughts and actions. It is believed that indulging in physical intimacy during this period diminishes the spiritual benefits of fasting and worship. Both husband and wife are advised to maintain self-control and focus on devotion.

Importance of Restraint During Fasting

Many devotees strictly follow fasting rules during Navratri. If one partner is fasting, engaging in physical relations is considered equivalent to breaking the fast. Moreover, both partners share the responsibility for this act. Therefore, self-discipline and control over body and mind are regarded as essential parts of Navratri observance.

What Do Scriptures Say?

During Navratri, Goddess Durga is worshipped in her nine forms. In Sanatan Dharma, women have long been revered as forms of the goddess. This is why virgin girls (Kanya) are worshipped during Navratri, and women are treated with utmost respect.

The Manusmriti states:

"Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramante Tatra Devta?,
Yatraitaastu Na Pujyante Sarvastatraphalah Kriyah."

Meaning: In families and societies where women are respected, the gods themselves reside. But where women are not respected, all actions and rituals become fruitless.
