Arunachal Pradesh: 19-yr-old woodcutter rapes woman, going to deliver cold drinks to mother’s agricultural field; sentenced to 10 years RI

Itanagar: The court of District and Sessions Judge, Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday sentenced a man from Bana in East Kameng district to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) along with a fine of Rs 10,000 after finding him guilty of raping a young woman in November last year.
 
The accused Aga Mechar (19) was convicted under Sections 341 and 376 of IPC for wrongfully restraining and raping a woman in a jungle near the Kameng-Bichom confluence.
 
The incident happened on November 8, 2023 when the victim, who was delivering cold drinks to her mother’s agricultural field, was sexually assaulted and rendered unconscious after her mouth was gagged. The assailant fled the scene, leaving behind his bike and some belongings.
 
Following receipt of a written FIR, a case was registered at the Women’s Police Station, Seppa under Sections 341/323/376 of the IPC, prompting an investigation.
 
A police team, led by Inspector Sochi Don, the then officer in-charge of Seppa PS, along with SI (P) Dumbang Taching, and constable A Paffa under the supervision of East Kameng SP Kamdam Sikom, swiftly identified the accused, a woodcutter from Bana.
 
The accused from Mechar village under Chayangtajo PS, attempted to flee but the alert police successfully arrested him in Seppa town within two hours of the complaint.
 
Following a thorough investigation, the investigating officer, SI Dumbang Taching, submitted a chargesheet on February 8, and the trial subsequently commenced and the court delivered its judgment within five months, convicting Mechar of the heinous crime. Additionally, he was sentenced to one month in prison along with a fine of Rs 500 for wrongful restraint.
