New Delhi: The Army’s Court of Inquiry (CoI) on Monday issued orders to initiate disciplinary action against Major Leetul Gogoi after he was seen with a local Kashmiri woman in a Srinagar hotel earlier this year.

Major Gogoi, who tried to go to the hotel in Srinagar with a local woman, was found guilty of violation of rules by the Court of Inquiry which ordered for disciplinary action against him and he may possibly have to face court martial, Army sources here said.

The Army said Major Gogoi has been convicted of “fraternising with locals inspite of instructions to the contrary and for being away from the place of duty while in operational area”.

Now, competent authorities will take a decision on the basis of the evidence submitted whether to institute court martial proceedings.

Major Gogoi was caught on tape arguing with hotel staff of Hotel Grand Mamta after they objected to the woman’s presence. He was taken to the police station and left after interrogation.

Subsequently, the Court of Inquiry was formed to investigate the matter.

Major Gogoi came in to the headlines two years ago when he tied a local youth as a shield on the bonnet of his jeep to protect the security personnel going for election duty in Badgam district for the Lok Sabha by-election.

However, following an Army investigation into the matter, he was given a clean chit.

Major Gogoi, deployed in 53 Rashtriya Rifles, was honoured with the citation of the Army Chief last year for his good performance in counter-insurgency operations. (UNI)
