Delhi remains partly cloudy, likely to witness thunder, lightning

New Delhi: After Sunday's over 49 degrees in some areas of the national capital, Delhiites have witnessed some respite from the scorching heat as it has been cloudy on Monday and Tuesday.

The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 41 degrees Celsius, as per the India Meteorological Department.

“The sky will remain partly cloudy with possibility of thunder and lightning,” said IMD. The Southwest Monsoon, as per the IMD has landed six days ahead of schedule.

According to the weather agency, the minimum temperature in Delhi settled at 27.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, a notch above normal, while the relative humidity at 8.30 am was recorded at 57 per cent.

The MeT has already forecast no heatwave this week with temperatures expected to hover between 41 and 44 degrees Celsius. “The mercury may start rising on May 20 and the maximum temperature is likely to touch 45 degrees the,” it said.

According to the Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's base station, the maximum temperature had settled at 42.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal on Monday.

The air quality index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded in the poor (259) category around 11 am on Tuesday, data from CPCB showed.

With Monsoon covering Andaman and Nicobar Islands and adjoining areas rainfall has started due to strengthening south-westerly winds.

“Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman Sea & Andaman Islands and some parts of east-central Bay of Bengal during next 2-3 days” it said.

“Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep area over the next two days till Thursday. Heavy rainfall is also likely over coastal and south interior Karnataka tomorrow (Wednesday),” said IMD. (UNI)
