New Delhi: Expressing disappointment over the party’s performance in the recently concluded assembly elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said that while drawing lessons from the poll results, necessary steps are needed to improve the party.

“These results tell us clearly that we need to put our house in order,” she said in her opening remarks at a virtual meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) - the party’s highest decision-making body.

The Congress president said this CWC meeting has been convened to discuss the recent election results.

“We have to take note of our serious setbacks. To say that we are deeply disappointed is to make an understatement,” she said.

The Congress president said she intends to set up a small group to look at every aspect that caused such reverses and reports back very quickly.

“We need to candidly understand why in Kerala and Assam we failed to dislodge the incumbent governments, and why in West Bengal we drew a complete blank. These will yield uncomfortable lessons, but if we do not face up to the reality, if we do not look the facts in the face, we will not draw the right lessons,” the Congress president said.

In the meeting, she also talked about the election of a new Congress president and said the party has prepared a schedule for the election.

“When we met on January 22nd, we had decided that the process for electing a Congress President would be completed by end-June,” the Congress president said. (UNI)
