SC refuses to interfere in 'Padmavati' release

SC refuses to interfere in 'Padmavati' release

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere in the release of the Hindi film "Padmavati."The three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was hearing a plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma.

"We could not interfere with the work of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification)," said the bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. The court observed that the censor board has not awarded a certificate yet to the film and that is why it would not interfere with the work being done by the CBFC. Dismissing the plea, the bench asked the petitioner, "Can the court injunct a statutory body from exercising its function?"

Sharma, in his plea, had sought prosecution of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for allegedly depicting certain 'objectionable' scenes in the movie. He had also sought a direction from the court for a stay on the release and deletion of those 'objectionable' scenes from the film. (UNI)
