“Don't Forget My Successes”: Under Fire Coach Gautam Gambhir After India’s 408-Run Humiliation

Under-fire India head coach Gautam Gambhir said on Wednesday that the decision about his future lies entirely with the BCCI after India’s humiliating 408-run loss to South Africa, which sealed a 2-0 Test series whitewash.

Speaking after the crushing defeat in the second Test, Gambhir stressed that he has always prioritised Indian cricket over personal position.

“It is up to the BCCI to decide. I’ve said it in my first press conference when I took over as the head coach. Indian cricket is important, I’m not important. And I sit here and say exactly the same thing,” he said.

Gambhir also reminded critics of the successes achieved during his tenure. “And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I’m the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I’m sure you guys will forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand (home series whitewash last year). And I’m the same guy who won the Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup as well,” he remarked.

Owning responsibility for the disastrous series, he added, “The blame lies with everyone and starts with me. We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don’t blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won’t do it going forward.”

India have now lost 10 of 18 Tests under Gambhir, including whitewashes against New Zealand last year and South Africa at home. His strategy of constant team changes and preference for all-rounders over traditional specialists has also drawn scrutiny.

Defending his approach to Test cricket selection, Gambhir said, “You don’t need the most skillful or flamboyant players. You need tough characters with limited skills who can survive and succeed in any condition.”
