Pune ODI: West Indies defeat India by 43 runs, Kohli’s ton goes in vain

Pune: Resurgent West Indies defeated India by 43 runs in third ODI match of five-match series to level the series at 1-1 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here in Pune on Saturday.

Chasing a total of 284 runs, India bowled out for 240 runs in 47.4 overs. Virat Kohli scored his 38th ODI hundred to become the first Indian to score three consecutive tons in the format. He was dismissed by Marlon Samuels for 107 runs in 41st over.

India got off to a bad start as Rohit Sharma departed early on his individual score of eight runs.

Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli added 81 runs for the second wicket. Ashley Nurse dismissed Dhawan for 35 runs. Ambati Rayudu (22) and Rishabh Pant (24) got some good start but failed to convert those scores in big innings.

Former captain MS Dhoni again disappointed his fans and team India as he was dismissed for seven runs off 11 balls by Jason Holder.

India kept losing their wickets at the other end while Kohli was trying to take his team get over the line.

Kohli talking about his dismissal in post-match presentation ceremony said, “I was trying to go after Samuels as I was running out of my partners, but failed to do so.”

Samuels took three wickets for 12 runs in 3.4 overs. Ashley Nurse took two wickets for 43 runs in his ten overs.

While Jason Holder and Obed McCoy also bagged two wickets each.

Earlier in the day, Kohli won the toss and chose to ball first.

West Indies lost their three wickets for 55 runs. However, with the help of Shai Hope and Simron Hetmyer’s  95 and 37 runs innings, the Windies get past 200 runs mark.

Nurse and Kemar Roach chipped in with the bat towards the end of the innings to help the West Indies to score 283/9 in stipulated 50 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah, who was making his come back, bagged four wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs- it was his best bowling performance at home.

During the presentation ceremony, Kohli said, “We gave more runs in the last ten overs added that we also failed to make some partnerships during the course of the chase.

Ashley Nurse was named Man of the Match. (UNI)
