Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, Yam Dwitiya, or Bhratri Dwitiya, is celebrated on the Dwitiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month. On this day, sisters apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads, serve them food, and offer paan (betel leaf) as part of the ritual.
In 2025, there has been some confusion about the festival date — whether it will be on October 22 or October 23. According to the Hindu calendar and Udaya Tithi, Bhai Dooj should be celebrated on October 23, 2025.
Why Offering Paan on Bhai Dooj is Considered Auspicious
1. Symbol of Good Fortune and Prosperity: In Hindu tradition, paan represents auspiciousness and abundance. When sisters offer paan to their brothers, they pray for their happiness, prosperity, and success.
2. Ensures Lifelong Good Fortune for Sisters: It is believed that offering paan helps maintain a sister’s eternal good fortune (akhand saubhagya) and protects her from misfortune.
3. Removes Obstacles and Dangers: According to ancient beliefs, if a brother faces any impending trouble, this ritual helps ward off difficulties and bring peace to his life.
4. Sweetens the Bond: Offering paan also symbolizes love, respect, and harmony between siblings, keeping their bond strong and affectionate.

The Legend of Yam and Yamuna
This tradition is linked to the mythological story of Lord Yama (God of Death) and his sister Yamuna. According to legend, on this day, Yama went to his sister Yamuna’s home on invitation. Yamuna applied tilak on his forehead, served him delicious food, and offered paan afterward.
Pleased with her love and devotion, Yama granted Yamuna a boon — that any sister who performs this ritual for her brother on this day will ensure his long life and protect him from the fear of death.
From that time onward, the festival of Bhai Dooj has been celebrated by sisters inviting their brothers for a meal, applying tilak, and offering paan as a symbol of love, protection, and blessings.
It is also believed that brothers and sisters who perform this ritual and bathe in the Yamuna River on Bhai Dooj are freed from all sins and protected from Yama’s trials after death.
