Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the Dwitiya (second day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik of Hindu calendar. The festival is closely associated with Lord Yama (the god of death) and his sister Yamuna, which is why it is also called Yam Dwitiya. Let’s explore the story behind this day and why Yama is worshipped.

The Story of Yama and Yamuna

The tale involves Yamaraj, the son of Surya (the Sun God) and Chhaya, and his sister Yamuna. Yamuna often requested her brother with affection to visit her home and have a meal with her. However, Yamaraj, being busy with his divine duties, used to postpone her requests.

One day, on Dwitiya of Shukla Paksha in Kartik, Yamuna was overjoyed to find Yamaraj standing at her doorstep. Happy and excited, she warmly welcomed her brother and served him a lavish meal.

Pleased with his sister’s love, devotion, and hospitality, Yamaraj asked Yamuna to wish for a boon. Yamuna requested that Yamaraj should visit her every year on this day to share a meal. Secondly, any sister who feeds her brother after applying a ceremonial tilak (Tika) on this day, should not fear Yamaraj.

Yamaraj agreed with a “Tathastu” (so be it) and returned to Yamlok (the abode of Yama). Since then, it is believed that brothers who sincerely accept their sister’s hospitality on this day, and their sisters, are free from the fear of Yamaraj. ALSO READ: Bhai Dooj 2025: Date, Tilak Muhurat, and Rituals

Significance of the Ritual

Brothers should take a holy bath in the Yamuna River and honor their sisters’ hospitality.

Performing this ritual ensures that Yamaraj does not cause suffering in Yamlok.

On Bhai Dooj, worship is offered to Lord Yama and Yamuna, the siblings of divine lore.

After the meal, sisters traditionally offer paan (betel leaf) to their brothers, which is believed to ensure the sister’s long-lasting prosperity and well-being.

Thus, Bhai Dooj is a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, devotion, and protection from Yamaraj, the god of death. ALSO READ: Bhai Dooj 2025: Why Sisters Offer Paan to Their Brothers on This Festival
